Model: The Remuh Synagogue

The Remuh Synagogue Krakow, Poland.

Must Know

Built in 1553, it was named after the ReMA, the acronym of the legal authority Rabbi Moses Isserles. It was seized by the Nazis during the Holocaust and used to store fire-fighting equipment. In 1957, the building was renovated and restored and it is today once again an active synagogue.

The old Jewish cemetery of Krakow, which was destroyed during the Holocaust, was beside the synagogue. Fragments from hundreds of ancient tombstones have been uncovered in recent evacuations. They were placed against a cemetery wall that is now known as the “Wall of Tears.”
