Established in 1866, the New Synagogue was spared major damage from the pogrom of November 1938 (Kristalnacht). During the Second World War it was severly damaged by Allied bombing. in 1958, the main room of the synagogue was blasted. The building was reopened in 1995 with the permanent exhibition “Open Ye the Gates”
The synagogue was desecrated and set on fire during the Kristalnacht progom (the night of the Broken Glass). Precinct police chief Wilhelm Krutzfeld saved the building from destruction.
