When was it active? Inaugurated at the beginning of the 17th century, it was used as a synagogue until the Second World War. It was badly damaged during the war and the Jewish community annihilated. The building has since been renovated but no longer serves as a synagogue.
The Polish king ordered it to be built as a fortified synagogue and to be part of the city’s defense system. The roof featured embrasures, special openings so that cannons could fire from the synagogue.
