model: The Great German Synagogue

The Great German Synagogue The New Ghetto in Venice, Italy.

Must Know

Built in 1528, this is the oldest synagogue still standing in Venice. It is no longer active and currently serves as a museum.

Synagogues in the Venetian Ghetto were located in residential buildings and were characterized by a unique interior design. To make maximum use of the space, the prayer hall was not symmetrical and the Torah-reading platform (bimah) was located at one end of the synagogue, rather than in the center as is the usual Ashkenazi custom.
