model: Synagogue Zabludow

Synagogue Zabludow Bialystok region, northeastern Poland
Built in the mid-17th century, it was burnt down by the Germans in 1941.

Although this synagogue was made of wood, it was built without nails. According
to legend, a fire once broke out in the city, causing its residents to flee. Dozens of
birds hovered around the synagogue. By flapping their wings, they created a wind
that blew out the fire and saved the building.
If you look up, you’ll see a reconstruction of the ceiling of another wooden synagogue,
the Chodorow Synagogue. It, and the model in front of you, are a foretaste of our
exhibition on the upper floor, “Hallelujah – Synagogues Past and Present
