The synagogue was built in the mid-17th century, and paintings were added to the dome interior in 1722. The synagogue was destroyed by fire during the second World War.
Israel Lissnicki, artist known for his decoration of Eastern European synagogues, painted the ceiling at Chodorow including its many mythologcial animals.
