The original synagogue was built during the Middle Ages and destroyed by Napoleon’s army at the end of the 18th century. Rebuilt in 1850, it was closed at the beginning of the 21st century for security reasons.

The British-Jewish philanthropist Moses Montefiore donated money for the rebuilding of the synagogue.
