Louis Kahn (1901-1974) was a leading modernist architect and a proponent of brutalist architecture. His practice focused on light and its penetration into the structure and plays of space and mass. The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California is among his iconic buildings. The institute was founded in 1960 by Jonas Salk (1914-1995), inventor of the first safe and effective polio vaccine. he envisioned a laboratory in which the best scientists from different disciplines would work together to find cures for various diseases. The institute is considered a leading one in its field.
