Austrian-American actress and inventor who pioneered the technology that later became the basis for modern Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth communication. Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, she studied drama and acted in several German films. Fled Austria to London in 1937, where she became Hedy Lamarr. Starred in British and Hollywood films such as Samson and Delilah (1949) and produced several films herself. Despite having no formal scientific education, Lamarr developed several inventions and studied radio technology. In 1942, She co-invented and listed a patent on an extraordinary frequency hopping technology communication system (FHSS), which was used to guide torpedoes to their targets in war.
