A French feminist attorney, political activist, and essayist. She came from a poor Jewish family in Tunisia and came to Paris as a young woman, where she studied law and philosophy. She played a pivotal role in the French anti-colonialist movement and in the defense of independence fighters in Tunisia and Algeria. Halimi founded the feminist group Choisir (to choose) to protect the women who had signed the Manifesto of the 343 admitting to having illegal abortions, of which she was one, and advanced the legalization of contraception and abortion in France in 1974. .
