The first woman to preside over the Annual Speech Day at Jews’ College in London Her maternal great-grandfather was the Iraqi-born David Sassoon, who began the family business trading in opium and cotton. Flora Sassoon spoke seven languages, philanthropically supported the development of a cholera vaccine,. She published articles on history and on Jewish law and customs in a number of periodicals and extended assistance to Jewish immigrants who came to England.
