A Russian-born feminist, anarchist, and human rights champion, whose main causes were women’s rights, the LGBT community, and the working class. Described as a modern Joan of Arc, she was known as “Red Emma” due to her involvement in socialist politics and ability to captivate crowds with her speeches. Joining her sisters, she immigrated to the United States at the age of 16. After arriving in New York, she connected with anarchist circles and became a sought-after speaker. She worked in the United States and Europe, founded Mother Earth magazine, and advocated for women’s rights to their bodies.
