A New York-born feminist leader and attorney, civil rights activist, and member of the U.S. Congress. Called “Battling Bella,” Abzug was known for her wide-brimmed hats that became her trademark. She was a leader of second-wave feminism in the 20th century in the United States, and was also a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War. She was a co-founder of Women Strike for Peace and the National Women’s Political Caucus. Her campaign slogan in the Democratic Party primary election—“This woman’s place is in the House—the House of Representatives”—later became a feminist catchphrase.
