Menachem Mendel Schneerson 1902-1994 – The seventh and most recent rebbe of the Lubavitcher Hasidic dynasty, known as The Lubavitcher Rebbe, the spiritual leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. Born in Nikolaev, Russia, he was considered a prodigy as a child. He fled Europe when the Nazis rose to power and settled in the U.S. Under his leadership, Chabad became a dominant force in the Orthodox world, counting hundreds of thousands of followers. Worked to enhance the movement’s ties to Jewish communities and opened branches worldwide. Worked to translate and distribute Hassidic writings and expanded the Chabad education system. The messianic branch of the movement believes that the Rebbe did not die and is set to return as the Messiah.
