Austrian physician, psychologist, and writer. Originator of psychoanalysis. Among the most influential figures of the 20th century. Born the city of Freiberg in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Freud began by researching neurological disturbances and nervous conditions. In the late 19th century, he began studying consciousness. He argued that psychic distress and disease stems from the repression of childhood trauma and instinctual drives and was among the founders of therapy by speech. In 1906, he founded the Psychoanalytical Society. After the Anschluss, Freud escaped to London, where he died. Among his writings: The Interpretation of Dreams, The Ego and the Id, and Totem and Taboo. His philosophy remains fundamental to psychology and its practical implementations.
