American swimmer, one of the greatest swimmers of all time. He won 11 Olympic medals, including nine gold medals, and broke five different individual world records. In the 1972 Munich Olympics, Spitz won seven gold medals, the most medals won by a single athlete in the same Olympic competition (a record broken later by Michael Phelps). He won five gold medals in the Pan American Games and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1977.
