American actor, producer, director, philanthropist and writer. One of the most successful leading actors in the 1950s. Born Issur Danielovitch in Amsterdam, New York. His film debut was in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), and rose to fame with his role in Champion (1949), in which he played a ruthless boxer. Won numerous awards and published 11 books. Among his best-known films: Lust for Life (1956), for which he was awarded a Golden Globe, and Spartacus (1960). In 1991 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.
