German physicist, among the most illustrious scientists of all time, developer of the theory of Relativity, winner of the Nobel Prize (1921) for his astounding achievements. In 1905 published four groundbreaking papers that changed the understanding of the relation between time, matter and space, including a paper in which he presented his theory of Special Relativity. With the Nazi rise to power he lost his titles and possessions and emigrated to the U.S., where he taught at Princeton University. In 1939 he alerted President Roosevelt to the potential development of new, powerful bombs which eventually led to the Manhattan Project. Was a keen Zionist and socialist, his manuscripts were bequeathed to the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
