Researchers estimate that Jews made up around 40% of Alexandria’s population. Many of them were wealthy and integrated in hellenist culture, while at the same time practicing their Judaism.
Philo of Alexandria is among those who best exemplify this cultural blend. Considered the father of Jewish philosophy, he has been called the Jewish Plato, and he wrote in Greek. This diorama depicts Philo returning from a trip to Rome, where he attempted to revoke decrees against the Jews.
