Koufax (b. 1935), who played with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was among the most well-known Jewish athletes in the US and one of the best baseball players in history. In 1965 he refused to play in a game held on Yom Kippur – in a case that caused much debate and expressed the conflict between the wish to succeed and merge within society and the desire to remain loyal to Jewish traditions.
