Machzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Prayer Book for Jewish New Year anf the Day of Atonement) Facsimile, Catalonia, Spain, c. 1280

Must Know

“A Mahzor (prayer book) for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, written and illuminated in Catalonia, Spain, around 1280 for a cantor in the Jewish community. It is exceptional for its micrography decorations—intricate drawings created from tiny letters—featuring hunting scenes, the Temple vessels, and the Menorah. The Mahzor includes liturgical poems (*piyyutim*) by the greatest Jewish-Spanish poets, such as Rabbi Solomon ibn Gabirol, Rabbi Yehoda Halevi, and Rabbi Moshe ibn Ezra, reflecting the spiritual and cultural world of Catalonian Jewry in the Middle Ages. Today, the Mahzor is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Israel.”
