The amulets were written by Jonathan Eybeschütz (1694-1764), the rabbi of Altona, Germany, about 80 years after Shabbetai Zevi converted to Islam. They allude to Shabbetai Zevi’s name and to various Sabbetean phrases. They were first printed in 1725 in this anti-Sabbetean book, written by Jacob Emden, a fierce critic of the Sabbetean movement
