A Single Jewish Folklore? The systematic investigation of Jewish folklore began at the beginning of the 20th century with the pioneering ethnographic expedition to Ukraine (1912-1914) led by S. An-SkI , the author of The Dybbuk. Ahad Ha’am, one of the skeptics who doubted the value of the research, wrote: “whose heart, then, can undertake to confine traits of a people such as ours, dispersed and scattered among various nations for two thousand years?” And, in fact, the study of the various aspects of Jewish folklore attempts to define the traits of this ethnic group which has been dispersed in numerous geographical regions for over 2,500 years. Throughout, Jews have conducted a cultural dialog with their different and diverse host societies.
