Model: The Central Synagogue of Aleppo

The Central Synagogue of Aleppo Haleb, northwestern Syria.

Must Know

Built in 1418, the synagogue was in use until burnt down in 1947. In 1992, the community of Aleppo Jews in New York financed the partial renovation of the building although it is no longer used as a synagogue.

According to tradition, this was the site of the world’s first synagogue that was built by King David’s general Joab ben Zeruiah after he conquered the city. It is therefore known as the “Ancient Synagogue.”
