The Old Synagogue (Altneuschul) Prague, Czech Republic Founded in 1270, it is still in use today.
Must Know
Legend has it that this synagogue was built from stones borrowed from the Second Temple with the condition that the stones be returned to Jerusalem when the Messiah comes and the Temple is rebuilt. The synagogue’s name is said to come from this legend, as the hebrew term al tnai (one condition) sounds much like the German phrase alt-neu (old-new). The Altneuschul is reputed to be the oldest synagogue in Europe still in use today.
