World War II pitted the Axis powers, which included Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and the Japanese Empire, against the Allies, which included Great Britain and its colonies, France and the Soviet Union, and later on the United States and China.
The war took place in three main theaters: the European Theater, the North African and Middle East Theater, and the Pacific and Far East Theater. Around 70 million people were killed in the war – more than in any other war in human history.
