Between 1914 and 1918, a world war raged across more than half the globe. Around 1.5 percent of the population in the countries that took part in the war lost their lives – totaling over 16.5 million people, of whom about half were civilians. On one side of the fence were the Central Powers – the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. On the other side were the Allies – Great Britain and France (and their colonies), Italy and Russia. The United States entered the war not long before it ended. They battled each other for years and were engaged in bloody trench warfare.
