European colonialism affected the way of life in Muslim countries in the spheres of politics, the military, law and culture. Exposure to the West and modernization also had an impact on the culture of Jewish communities and on the education they gave their children. Jews were drawn to the norms of the colonial powers (France, Britain or Italy), sometimes at the expense of their cultural bond with the Muslim-majority society.
Different groups in the Jewish population adapted to the new reality in various ways and over different periods of time. Their lives progressed between local and foreign culture and between tradition and modernity.
