The medallion was minted by Hamburg’s Jewish community. Riesser (1806-1863) was a lawyer and politician who promoted the emancipation of German Jews. The obverse figures two women representing Christianity and Judaism, and around them the phrase “Have we not all one father.” The dedication on the reverse reads “To the justice and freedom fighter, Dr. Gabriel Riesser, from the members of his community in Hamburg, 1863.”
