The principle of freedom of religion was stipulated in the U.S. Bill of Rights. Nonetheless, the text that became the indisputable symbol of the Jews’ equal rights was a letter written by George Washington in 1790, in which he stated that “the Government of the United States […] gives bigotry no sanction […]. May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants.”
