A wave of religious fanaticism swept the world at the beginning of the second millennium. In Europe, the Crusaders declared a holy war whose purpose was to free Jerusalem from the Muslim infidels. In North Africa, fanatic groups swore to Islamize the world in a jihad (holy war). Both behaved violently towards followers of other religions and left a trail of devastation and destruction behind them.
