Text: A Cultural Renaissance

Text Panel

Between the 12th and 16th centuries, the Christian world experienced a cultural renaissance. During this period, universities were established and numerous treatises were written. This cultural awakening could also be seen in the construction of imposing cathedrals and works of art, some of which are considered masterpieces of Western culture to this very day. Women were also part of this process in Europe and the emergence of female mysticism (beginning in the 12th century) gave them a role which they were not given in other religions.
