herod (73 or 74 BCE – 4 BCE), the last king of Judea, was the greatest builder in the Land of Israel in ancient times. His construction projects, some of which were enhancements of buildings dating back to the period of the Hasmonean kings, could be found throughout the kingdom. They included large, elegant and unusual structures, such as palaces, theaters, bridges and fortresses, whose fame extended beyond the Jewish world.
