Lebanese Brazilian banker, member of the Syrian Safra banking dynasty, the richest banker in Brazil, and donator to many Jewish institutions worldwide. Born in Beirut, like other family members he went into his father’s financial business. He emigrated with his family to Brazil where in 1957 he founded the bank that became one of the country’s largest. Safra serves as chairman of all Safra companies, including Safra National Bank of New York, and Banco Safra in Säo Paulo. He owns holdings in various agricultural and industrial companies. He is considered the wealthiest banker in Brazil and the second richest person in the country, and donates to a wide spectrum ofphilanthropic projects.
