Italian painter and sculptor, member of the school of Paris painters and one of the most important artists of the early 20th century. Born in Livorno, began painting as a child, studied art in Florence and Venice. In 1905 moved to Paris. His works, which often express loneliness, sadness and alienation, focused on female nude and portraits. Known for his unique style characterized by long-limbed figures, women with long necks, and a particular palate. Exhibited in exhibitions throughout Europe yet was banned from presenting his nudes. Died in Paris from typhus following years of alcohol and drug abuse, aged 36. Became famous posthumously when his paintings were recognized as an important body of work in modern art.
