American Orthodox rabbi, Jewish philosopher, and spiritual leader. Born in Pruzhany of the Russian Empire (today Belarus), he studied in Berlin, and settled in the U.S. He was among the most important figures of Halacha in the 20th century and combined Talmudic knowledge and extensive general and philosophical education. His philosophical work focused on the meaning of Jewish existence and life according to Halacha for the modern person. As leader of the modern Orthodox movement in American for half a century, he ordained 2,000 rabbis. His public address, Kol Dodi Dofek: Listen, My Beloved Knocks (1956) has become a constitutive text of religious Zionism. His important writings include: The Halakhic Mind (1944) and The Lonely Man of Faith (1965).
